Building Blocks for Peace Foundation is a registered non-governmental and non-profit youth-led organization working on countering violent extremism, conflict prevention, peacebuilding, accountability governance, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Job Purpose Summary
Building Blocks for Peace Foundation with support from Spaces for Change is conducting an empirical research that seeks to identify and analyse incidents of over application or abuse of security infrastructure to crack down on civic actors/spaces in Southwest Nigeria. Some of the project objectives include:
- To assess whether the #ENDSARS protests informed new waves of securitised responses to protests, free speeches and media freedoms in Southwest Nigeria;
- To examine some of the negatives narratives that have emerged to discredit protests and dissent in the wake of the protests against police brutality in October 2020;
- To establish how anti-protest rhetoric, misinformation, and coronavirus protocols are fuelling police repression of protests in the southwest;
- To assess the effects of government’s anti-protest rhetoric on the public perception of activists and protesters;
- To find out some of the security-related narratives used by state and federal authorities pushing to discredit the agitations for self-determination in the southwest;
- To examine whether the operations of the Western Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun have any implications for human rights and democratic freedoms of citizens;
- To look for entry opportunities for engagement with state authorities and law enforcement operatives in view of upholding the rights and freedoms of citizens to protest and express their viewpoints without fear of intimidation.
To provide answers to some of the research objectives, BBFORPEACE is recruiting data collectors based in the South-Western part of Nigeria for this short-term research project. The data collectors will be responsible for:
- Conducting field research and collecting qualitative data from respondents through in-depth interviews and focus group description;
- Travelling to designated areas to conduct interview and take snapshots;
- Gathering and accurately recording responses on questions provided by the lead researcher;
- Transcribing recordings of interviews and focus group discussions in written form
Duration of Project: Short term (Between July and August, 2021)
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or its equivalent
- Must be resident in the Southwest region of Nigeria
- Previous experience in data collection and conducting interviews is needed
- Fluency in speaking and understanding English and Yoruba
- Willingness to learn and explore new experiences
- Excellent report writing skills in English
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Respect for confidentiality
