Press Statement on the “Reckless Killings of Nigerian Youths by the SARS Security Unit”

We condemn in strongest terms the killing of Tiamiyu Kazeem and other four (4) young Nigerians protesting yesterday by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police Force in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. To us, this act is barbaric, unjustifiable, unprofessional, and falls short of societal expectations from an institution saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property.

Human security is the right of the people and a fundamental international objective with evidences of resolutions articulated in codified norms including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948. It is a requirement for national peace and development. It was the need to protect this right that led to the establishment of state institutions such as the police force in various sovereign States.

It is therefore worrisome and security threatening that the operations of such a legitimate institution in Nigeria negates its constitutional mandates and as well violates the principle of human security and article 3 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The implication of violating this right cannot be overemphasized as such could degenerate national peace, stability and development with an end result of total loss of confidence in the police force and the Nigerian State.

We, therefore call on the government to ensure that full investigation is carried on this barbaric action by the members of the Nigerian police and those found wanting are punished in accordance with the laws of land. The Buhari led government must ensure that young men and women are given adequate protection and priority. The youths constitute a vital agent of peace consolidation in Nigeria and so therefore, it is very important for the Nigerian government to avoid clamping down on national stability through security forces securitization and violence against the youths.
